At the beginning, the Orchestra was located at the Memorial Hall of Principal Ono at the Taipei Provincial Third Girls’ Senior High School (now Taipei Municipal Zhongshan Girls’ High School), which was established while Taiwan was a colony of Japan, and temporarily closed during the time it was used by the Orchestra. Then in March 1946, the Orchestra moved to the Li-Yi Temple (West Honganji) at 174 Chunghua Road, Taipei, and temporarily used the auditorium at Taipei Perng-Lai Elementary School for rehearsals. In 1961, it moved to the Taiwan Provincial Normal University (now National Taiwan Normal University), until in 1972, following the Government Office, the Orchestra moved to Taichung and began using the Chung-Hsing Performance Hall at the National Taichung Library for rehearsals. In 1975, the Orchestra moved once more, to Wu-Feng in Taichung County at Ming-Sheng Road, where in May of 1978 it established a recital hall and office building.

The Friendliest Orchestra
In order to attract people and create a friendly atmosphere, the Orchestra frequently features outdoor concerts around the neighborhood and tour performances played on the movable stage. The initial outdoor concert, arranged by the first director Chih-Kue Tsai, was performed at the 228 Memorial Park with free admission; and was so popular it then became a weekly event.

In the past years, the performances have included: Die Zaubeflote, La Traviata, Rogiletto, Rigoletto, La Boheme, Il Barbiere di Siviglia, and so on; large operas by Taiwanese composers: Chinese opera uffa, The 100th Bride, world-premier of Xi Shi, Skylark of Tang-Shan, Field and dance dramas such as Going to West Gate, Dream of Dun-Huang, Dance with Music of Chime Bells, The fantastical theatrical Mr.S, and The Shuttle.

Promotion of Musical Activities

In order to encourage Taiwanese composers, the Orchestra organizes Composers’ Seminars, and invites renowned composers to share their experiences and impart skills to young students. In addition, the Orchestra holds various music contests: concerto competition, composition competition, ensemble competition, and so on; and even two Chinese Lieder karaoke contests for the enjoyment of the public.

Music Education, and Professional Performance and Training

The Orchestra arranges music camps in summer and winter. After concentrated training, those youngsters, from different areas in Taiwan, between the ages of 10 and 20 will challenge the professional orchestral repertoire, be evaluated by professional musicians, and finally participate in tour performances in Taiwan or abroad. This experience has provided an unforgettable and precious memory in the lives of the participants.
