From Beethoven on, all great composers’ goal in life is to compose great symphonies. The symphony is regarded, in the classical music circle, as a significant repertory to show the maturity of local musical development, and the ultimate attainment in both academic and artistic fields, internationally.
Thus, the symphony has played a significant role in classical music in Taiwan. For instance, the long-standing “National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra” was founded over six decades ago. Since the establishment, a great number of outstanding domestic and international musicians have been invited to perform, and the Orchestra has created many exceptionally grand occasions. Moreover, it is the first orchestra giving tour performances in Taiwan. In the past sixty years, a lot of international music groups and musicians have been invited to perform, which vastly influenced and helped the symphony rooting in Taiwan.
In addition, a lot of great musicians have been well-trained in Taiwan. For instance, Wen-Yeh Chiang’s “Formosan Dance”, which he composed, brought him fame and won the special Olympic medal at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin. He was the first Asian to win such an important award, and to capture the attention of the world. For decades, there have been many outstanding Taiwanese musicians appearing one after another in international competitions as well as grand awards, and many groups being invited to perform around the world.
The special exhibition, “The Symphony Orchestra in Taiwan”, features the introductions of the orchestras, composers, conductors, and instruments. It presents the development of the symphony orchestra in Taiwan, and its great achievements, such as creating a state of compatibility for a great diversity of music styles. Also, it brings up an idea that a great composition needs to be interpreted well by an outstanding orchestra; and on the other hand, an outstanding orchestra needs a great composition to bring its skills into full play. Through the mutual efforts by the orchestra and composers, they present a touching story of symphony orchestra in Taiwan together.
